SKV PROCESS

Thermit has perfected a new quick welding process with a short pre-heating time called the SKV process. Principles of this process are much the same as that of conventional Thermit rail welding except:

		Pre-fabricated dry moulds are used instead of green moulds used in the conventional process with a wider gap between thetwo rail lines.
		The time of pre-heating has been reduced to 10 minutes against 40 to 45 minutes in the conventional process.
		It is possible to execute the SKV welds in traffic with pauses of under 20 minutes instead of 55 minutes required in theconventional process.

The SKV welds were possible to be made in traffic pauses in nearly 20 minutes instead of 55 minutes required in conventional process.

Subsequently, SKV welding techniques for various rail sections and chemistries like 72 UTS, 90 UTS, 110 UTS and Chrome Manganese Alloy Steel were developed. After completing the field trials, formal approval for all the techniques was given by the Indian Railways.
